8/31/15

Today students completed the Gummy Bear Lab. The Gummy Bears were definitely different then they were on Friday when we started soaking them. They sat for three days and they are HUGE!!! Students calculated mass, volume, and density. Then they could if they wanted to eat the gory and gooey remains.

The Homework for tonight is to complete the Lab Coat. Below are the directions:
FRONT-colored or decorated
INSIDE-left flap-5 rules of lab safety
right flap-steps of scientific method
middle-types of variables
AND
write and answer this question:
How can I use experimental design correctly in this science class?
BACK: Name, class period, teacher

Today we started the Gummy Bear Lab. Students measured the height, width, length, volume, mass and some classes added density of the gummy worms. They will stay soaking in the water until Monday when we will repeat the steps and compare the data. GT classes are comparing generic gummy bears and Haribo gummy worms to see if the ingredients and quality of the gummy bear may have an effect on the results.

Experimental Design Notes

A hypothesis is a prediction not an educated guess because predictions are based on evidence and prior knowledge not just a hunch.

Variables are things that CAN change but do not necessarily change in an experiment.

Independent or manipulated variable change or are manipulated by the scientist.

Dependent variables or responding variables are measures as a result of the independent variable changing.

Controlled or constant variables are those that are identical for each group or object. These are the variables that stay the same during the experiment.

Causation and correlation are where the data may be linked. However, causation would need to be predictable and clearly defined with a cause and effect. For example: children watching violence on T.V. makes them violent. This may seem like causation, but, when you look at all of the factors that may impact this; socio-economic background, environmental factors, maturity, emotionality, background, culture etc. You can not definitively say that violence on T.V. causes children to become violent.

Remember The Scientific Method is one process that scientists can use for their experimental design. These steps can be followed in order, less or more steps can be used, and they can go out of order. Some scientists make observations and do not conduct experiments and thus do not use this method of organization.

Watch this video on the Scientific Method and Variables to help put all of this together.

Today we are discussing lab safety by watching a Zombie Collage Lab safety video and taking a walk to observe our science lab safety equipment. Students took home lab safety contracts that need to be signed and returned by Friday, August 28th.

Today we played with gummy worms and gummy life savers to complete a lab activity called 'Saving Sam" Students had a fun time reviewing safety procedures, and experimental design when discovering various ways to save Sam the gummy worm.

Great First day of School!!!

Welcome to 7th Grade.

This week we will be getting to know each other, learning class procedures and rules, and learning about lab safety and experimental design. We will be doing two quick and fun lab experiments and watching a cool zombie lab safety video. This year we will be using a lot of technology and creativity to make this science classroom all about "blending" science, writing, math, engineering, art, and real life into an engaging, interactive, STEM, collaborative classroom.

I look forward to meeting all of you on Monday!

Blended Classroom Online Tools

Hello parents and students, Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. As a blended classroom we will be using several online tools.

We have a class website http://collidingwithscience.weebly.com/. All class information about Science is found on this website. Please visit the website to find unit summaries, vocabulary, and resources.

This blog (collidingwithscience.blogspot.com) will be the class daily correspondence.

The wiki https://collidingwithscience.wikispaces.com/ will have project, PBL, and student science entries. It will be more for an open forum about science.

The places to go for all documents and handouts will be Canvas.

finally,

Our student blog for discussions and quizzes for individual classes is located at www.kidblog.org.

Students will be provided with class codes to create an account for Kidblog.

I look forward to getting to know you throughout the year.
