Visual Notes

As students were waiting Friday for their potatoes to soak- they worked in their sketch books on their first set of visual notes. This Tuesday- Day of the Test- students will be turning in their set on Cells and their set on Plants.






Potato Turgor Pressure Lab

Friday students investigated the difference of osmotic pressure by putting a potato piece in salt water and a second one in distilled water and then waiting for twenty minutes. Then they checked the firmness pf each- determining which solution cause more osmosis of water molecules and lowered the turgor pressure more. They got practice with the balance scale and collecting data: mass before and after the experiment.







Thursday was Flower Dissection

Students were engaged with the flower dissection where they learned about the anatomy of a flower. It was a fun day full of pollen, pistils, stamen and loads of other parts.

Eggs final day!

And... eggs in food coloring for the last day of egg osmosis lab. Monday we will discuss why each stage took place and how the cell membrane is semi-permeable and why it is important.

Thank you Parents!

Thank you parents for your support and generosity. All of these amazing investigations and experiments and STEM creations are aided by the makerspace and I am very thankful for all the past and future donations. Sorry I wont see you tonight at open house but PLEASE contact me if you have any questions or concerns and I hope the slide show was helpful in demonstrating the design and flow of our :collidingwithscience" classroom.

I look forward to a great school year with all of your amazing children.

Gummy Bear Lab

Last week we kicked off osmosis with a gummy bear lab. Students soaked their bears over night , 1 in salt water and 1 in tap water or they soaked different types of gummy bears (Haribo or Kroger brand) in water. The results were fun.






1st Graffiti Wall of the Year

We have a chalkboard in our classroom that we use for Graffiti and Cartoons. This week we created our first of the year about cells.




Giant Cells Oh My!

This week students created giant cell organelles and wrote descriptions of their structure, function etc. Then the classes added them to a giant cell. They turned out awesome. Our makerspace at work. STEM design at its best.
